Poker Stars Review Details
Since opening in 2000, Poker Stars has become one of the most popular poker sites out there, and deservedly so. They run a pretty tight ship all-around, which helps them maintain a loyal player base. They offer quite a few freeroll tournaments (entry determined by Frequent Player Points) around the clock, although they can get crowded fast.
Site/Services
8.7
As I said above, Poker Stars is a well run site. They seem to be attentive to customer needs and feedback, continuously keeping the site up to date. They are a little slim with deposit/withdrawal options, but the popular Neteller and Firepay methods are accepted, and transactions are processed within a decent time frame. Also, customer service is average, but can sometimes lag in response time. Very user-friendly design allows for easy site navigation. Their tournament info page is helpful, as well.
Software/ Graphics
9.5
Nice, clean graphics with bright colors. You can play on multiple tables at the same time even better now with a new screen re-sizing function for hold'em games. But, playing on multiple tables, or playing during heavy traffic times, has caused some software lag, although they are still better than most other sites. Also, players have a useful statistics tab at the table, as well as in the main lobby menu, which tracks your basic session stats. (Software may work with Macs using Microsoft Virtual PC for Mac software.)
Games: Variety/Action
9
Offering a nice spread of table games and tournaments, Poker Stars keeps a fairly consistent flow of action all day/night long. They offer the usual Limit, Pot-Limit and No-Limit variations of Texas Hold’em, Omaha and Omaha Hi/Lo. They also have decent action on their 7-Card Stud tables (they can thin out some late-night), with 7-Card Stud Hi/Lo games available as well. Poker Stars offers good tournament action, at all money levels and during all hours. They also have good 24-hour traffic for the various Sit & Go tournaments offered. The tournaments can be challenging at times to move into the money brackets, but the action is good and consistent.
Players: Variety/Action
9
Poker Stars scored among the top 10 for this category. They have the usual mix of weak/passive and strong/aggressive players, but even more so defined between the lower and higher limit games. Most players you find at the higher limit tables are playing there because they know what they are doing. And you should too before sitting down at such a table.
Promotions
7.9
Poker Stars has a rare policy of not offering a regular initial deposit bonus. However, they do offer quarterly reload bonuses (usually 20% up to $120) throughout the year, and still is one of the more popular sites. They also have a Frequent Player Points (FPP) program, earning players points for the usual requirements in raked games, multi-table and sit & go tournaments. Besides using the points to buy gifts, Poker Stars offers an excellent array of daily FPP cash tournaments and other FPP promo tournaments (such as super-satellite tournaments to the World Series of Poker). And starting in December 2005, Poker Stars will be launching a new VIP Club. Now, in addition to earning Frequent Player Points (FPPs), players who continue to play at PokerStars will also earn VIP Player Points (VPPs). As players earn points and move up in VIP levels, PokerStars will be offering more benefits, exclusive tournaments, and other bonus FPP opportunities.
Rake
10
Comparatively, their rake structure is simple, fair, and on the lower end of rated poker sites. Thus, a score of 10/10 here. For their rake details, go to the Poker Stars website; click on the “Site Map” tab on the right; then under the “Poker Room” heading click on “Rake.
